Klein Aus is on the road to the sea, skirting the edge of the southern Namib, with diamond concessions on the other side. Its also here that the small population of Namibian wild horses are to be found.
These wild horses derive from escaped farm animals and German cavalry horses, which made their bid for freedom during the First World War. They are now threatened, as are the local gemsbok (oryx) by newly fenced-off farmland, limiting their normal migration routes to fresh grazing, governed by infrequent rain.
